Most commonly, a keyboard refers to the set of keys used to enter text or commands into a computer, typewriter, or similar machine. It is usually recognized by its layout, most often the QWERTY standard, which was designed to support efficient typing. Over the decades, keyboards have evolved from heavy mechanical machines to slim wireless models, gaming boards with extra programmable keys, and even virtual versions on touchscreens.

However, the term has much older roots in music. Long before the first computer, "keyboard" described the row of keys on instruments like the piano, organ, or harpsichord. In this sense, the keys produce sound rather than letters or symbols. Today, a musician might say they play "the keyboard," meaning an electronic instrument that can create many different sounds.

The word itself is simple: a "board" of "keys." Its musical meaning goes back centuries, but the sense widened in the 19th and 20th centuries as inventors used keys to produce letters, symbols, and later digital signals, not just musical notes.

You'll often hear someone described as a "master of the keyboard," a phrase that can fit a great pianist as well as a very fast typist. In the digital age, we also rely on "keyboard shortcuts," key combinations that let us skip menus and do tasks quickly.
