A joystick is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or direction to the system it's controlling. While most people associate joysticks with video games – think arcade classics like Pac-Man or modern flight simulators – their origins are far more practical.

The term "joystick" became widely used during World War I to describe the control sticks used by pilots to maneuver aircraft. These early joysticks were crucial for controlling a plane's ailerons and elevators, allowing pilots to bank, turn, and climb.
