Joules aren't just for lifting apples. They measure many forms of energy: kinetic (motion, like a rolling ball), potential (stored energy, like a stretched rubber band), thermal (heat, like from a stove), electrical (energy from electricity), and more.
You'll see joules used in many places. Food labels often list calories, which can be converted to joules in science. Electric bills usually use kilowatt-hours (kWh), a unit equal to a large number of joules. Scientists use joules when talking about the energy in chemical reactions, moving objects, heat, light, and much more.
So, while you might not calculate joules every day, knowing that this is the basic unit for measuring energy helps you understand the world around you, from tiny particles to stars in space.
