Joinery is the branch of woodworking that deals with joining pieces of wood together, often by shaping the wood so the parts fit firmly and neatly rather than depending only on nails or screws. It is an old craft, practiced for centuries in the making of furniture, buildings, ships, and many other wooden objects. Good joinery depends on accuracy, planning, and an understanding of how wood behaves over time.

Historically, joinery was different from general carpentry. Carpenters usually worked on the larger structural parts of a building, such as framing and roofing, while joiners focused on more finished and detailed work like doors, windows, stairs, paneling, cabinets, and other interior features. Today the boundary is not always strict, but the main idea remains the same: making strong, clean, well-shaped connections between wooden parts.

There are many kinds of joints, and each one suits a different purpose. A dovetail joint, for example, is very strong and is often used in drawers because it resists being pulled apart. A mortise-and-tenon joint gives a solid connection in furniture, frames, and other heavy wooden pieces. The right choice depends on the job, the kind of wood, the weight the joint must carry, and the look the maker wants.

You will hear "joinery" used in more than one way. It can mean the skill or craft itself, as in learning joinery or studying traditional joinery methods. It can also mean the finished woodwork, as in "the joinery in this old chest is excellent." In British English, it may even refer to a workshop or business that makes wooden fittings such as doors, windows, or stairs. In all these uses, the idea is much the same: careful woodwork built on strong, skillful joints.
