The word "joiner" has two main uses. In everyday general English, it can mean a person who likes to join clubs, groups, or organized activities. In this sense, it often describes someone sociable or eager to take part: "She's always been a joiner, signing up for every committee and community event."

The word also has an important trade meaning. Especially in British English, a joiner is a skilled woodworker who makes or fits wooden parts such as doors, window frames, staircases, cupboards, paneling, and furniture. Historically, this role was different from that of a carpenter. Carpenters usually dealt with larger structural work on a building, while joiners focused on the more exact and finished woodwork.

A skilled joiner understands how wood behaves and how to cut and fit pieces together accurately. The work may involve making strong joints and producing smooth, finished items that look good as well as work well. In modern usage, the line between carpenter and joiner is not always strict, but "joiner" still often suggests fine woodworking and careful fitting rather than rough construction. So depending on the context, the word may point either to an enthusiastic group participant or to a craftsperson working with wood.
