The word "jihadi" comes from jihad, an Arabic term that means "struggle" or "striving." In Islamic thought, jihad can refer to different kinds of effort, including moral or spiritual struggle. But in present-day English, "jihadi" usually has a much narrower meaning. It commonly describes a person involved in violent Islamist militancy who claims a religious reason for fighting.

Over time, especially in international news coverage, the word has become closely tied to extremist groups, insurgencies, and terrorist organizations. A "jihadi" is therefore not just any Muslim believer or any person speaking about jihad. The word usually points to someone linked to violent action, often with political as well as religious goals. Because of that, it carries a very negative and emotionally charged sense.

This distinction matters. Many Muslims strongly object to the way extremist groups use religious language, and they reject the idea that such violence represents Islam. For learners, the safest understanding is that in modern usage, "jihadi" is mainly a media and political term for a violent Islamist militant, while jihad itself has broader meanings that go beyond warfare.
