An island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. This is the most common and literal meaning, conjuring images of palm trees, sandy beaches, and turquoise waters. Islands can be formed in many ways – volcanic activity (like Hawaii), coral reefs building up over time (like the Maldives), or even pieces of continents breaking away (like Madagascar). They vary enormously in size, from tiny uninhabited islets to massive landmasses like Greenland.

However, "island" isn't always about geography. It can also be used metaphorically to describe something that is isolated or separate from its surroundings. You might say a community is an "island of tradition" if it fiercely maintains its customs despite outside influences. Or perhaps someone feels like they live on "an island of loneliness," meaning they are socially isolated.

The concept of islands has deeply influenced literature and culture, often representing themes of isolation, adventure, and escape. Think of Lord of the Flies, where a group of boys stranded on an island descend into savagery, or The Tempest by Shakespeare, set entirely on a magical island.

Furthermore, in urban planning, "island" can refer to traffic islands – raised areas within roadways designed to direct traffic flow. So whether it's a physical landmass, a metaphorical refuge, or a piece of concrete guiding cars, an island always suggests something distinct and separate from the world around it.
