"Inward" describes movement or attention that goes toward the inside of something. This can be about physical space, like a door opening inward, or about a person's mind and feelings, like someone turning inward during a hard time.

Think of a line moving toward the center. That is the basic idea. We also use the word when someone stops focusing on the outside world and starts thinking more about their own thoughts or emotions. In both cases, the sense is the same: toward the inside, the center, or the self.

"Inward" signifies a direction or orientation toward the interior of something—be it physical, emotional, or spiritual. It describes movement, thought, or focus that is directed inside rather than outward. For example, the phrase "the tide was moving inward" indicates water flowing toward the shore.

But "inward" isn't always about physical space. We often use it to describe internal states and processes. A person experiencing grief might "turn inward," withdrawing from social interaction to process their emotions privately. Similarly, a meditative practice encourages an "inward" journey of self-discovery, focusing on inner peace and understanding.

The opposite of inward is outward—think about how we often contrast external appearances with internal feelings. "Inwardly," someone might be feeling anxious while outwardly appearing calm. The word can also describe qualities possessed internally: a person with "inward strength" possesses resilience and fortitude that isn't necessarily visible to others.

Historically, the concept of inwardness has been central to many philosophical and religious traditions, emphasizing introspection, self-knowledge, and a connection to an inner life force. So, whether describing physical direction, emotional states, or spiritual journeys, "inward" always points toward what lies within.
