The word "inside" usually refers to the inner part of something, the area that is surrounded by an outer edge or surface. Think of a house: the rooms inside are where people eat, sleep, and relax. Think of a box: whatever is inside it is held within it, not outside it. You could say, "She kept the letter inside a drawer," or "The children waited inside while it rained."

The word can also move beyond physical space. It may describe private feelings or thoughts, as in "Deep down inside, he was worried." It can describe special knowledge too. An "inside joke" is funny mainly to the people who share the background. In a similar way, an "inside source" or an "insider" suggests someone with special access to information.

"Inside" is often used as the opposite of "outside," and that contrast is one of its most common uses. We go inside a building, look inside a bag, or stay inside when the weather is bad. In some expressions, it adds the idea of completeness, such as "inside and out," which means every part has been checked, cleaned, or understood.

So, whether you are talking about a place, an object, a feeling, or private knowledge, "inside" points to what is within, hidden, or held by something rather than beyond it.
