"Intimal" is a technical adjective in anatomy and medicine. It means relating to the intima, the innermost layer of a blood vessel, or more broadly to an inner lining layer of a structure. In practice, the word is used most often for arteries and veins. For example, the intimal lining of an artery is the surface that comes into direct contact with flowing blood. In medical writing, common phrases include intimal hyperplasia, intimal thickening, and intimal injury, all of which describe changes in that inner layer.

Because "intimal" looks so much like "intimate," it can be confusing at first. But in modern English, the two words live in different places. "Intimate" usually deals with personal closeness, while "intimal" is mainly a medical or biological term. It does not usually describe emotions, friendship, or private human connection. Its job is much narrower and more exact: it points to the inner lining of a vessel or similar structure.
