The word endothelial refers to the endothelium, a single layer of specialized cells that lines the inside of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries. It forms the key boundary between the blood or lymph and the surrounding tissues. Found throughout the body, from the lungs to the kidneys, this lining helps regulate what passes out of the vessels and into the tissues.

This is often an early sign of cardiovascular disease and a major contributor to atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Because of this, researchers study ways to protect the endothelium and reduce the risk of chronic illness.

For example, scientists investigate endothelial progenitor cells, specialized cells that may help repair damaged vessel walls after a heart attack. They also study ways to support endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), an enzyme that helps keep vessels flexible and healthy. While it is a technical term, understanding endothelial health is an important part of understanding long-term cardiovascular health.
