intervention

Intervention is the act of stepping into an ongoing situation to influence the result. Usually, the goal is to help, correct a problem, or prevent harm, but the word can also suggest interference, especially when the action is not wanted.

People often hear this word in a personal setting. If someone is struggling with addiction, family or friends may plan a serious talk to push that person toward treatment. In health care, an intervention can be a treatment, procedure, or other medical step used to improve a condition or stop it from getting worse. In public health, a vaccination campaign or school program may be called an intervention because it is designed to improve outcomes.

The word is also common in government, law, and international affairs. A government may take action in the economy to control prices, support jobs, or calm a crisis. One country may intervene in another country's conflict, diplomatically or militarily. In these cases, the word does not automatically mean the action is good. It only tells you that an outside force stepped in to affect events.

In research, an intervention is the treatment or action introduced so that researchers can measure its effect. Across all these uses, the central idea stays the same: something is already underway, and a person, group, or institution enters the situation to change its direction.
