indentation

C1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˌɪndɛntˈeɪʃən/

US

  • /ˌɪnˌdɛnˈteɪʃən/

Description

Think about pressing your thumb into soft clay. That leaves a small dip or hollow, and that is an indentation. You can also see one in a pillow after someone gets up, in sand after a shoe steps on it, or in a surface after something heavy has pressed into it.

The word is also common in writing and layout. In that case, it means the space left at the beginning of a line, especially at the start of a new paragraph. That extra space helps organize text and makes it easier to read.
