impression

B1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ɪmprˈɛʃən/

US

  • /ˌɪmˈprɛʃən/

Description

An impression is the effect something has on your mind or feelings. Think of walking through a forest after rain. The smell of wet earth and the soft light through the trees stay with you. That feeling you carry away is an impression. It can be quick, like a first impression of someone you meet, or lasting, like the effect a powerful book leaves on you. It can also be a physical mark, such as when you press your hand into clay. And sometimes it means copying the voice or style of another person, often to be funny.

The word comes from the idea of pressing something into a surface. Just as a seal leaves a mark on wax, our experiences leave marks on us. A good storyteller knows how to create a strong impression with words.
