This can appear in many ways. In romantic relationships, it may mean seeing your partner as flawless, ignoring warning signs, or believing they are "the one" despite clear evidence otherwise. It is common in the early stages of infatuation, often driven by strong emotion and wishful thinking. However, if it continues for too long, it can lead to disappointment when reality becomes impossible to ignore.
Beyond romance, people often idealize figures from history or celebrities, giving them heroic qualities they may never have had. We may also idealize certain times in history, places such as a "perfect" vacation spot, or even our own past, remembering the good parts and forgetting the bad ones.
In psychology, idealization is often seen as a defense mechanism, a way to cope with anxiety, insecurity, or difficult feelings by placing perfection onto other people or things. It can also be connected to attachment patterns and early childhood experiences. While some positive thinking is healthy, too much idealization can distort our sense of reality and make genuine connection harder.
So while it is natural to admire good qualities in others, true understanding comes from seeing people and the world as they are, not only as we want them to be.
