Description
- low blood pressure
- dizziness
- faintness
Imagine your circulatory system as a network of water pipes. This word describes a state where the pressure in those pipes is too low. In the body, that means blood is not pushing strongly enough against the walls of the arteries. It can make someone feel dizzy, weak, sick, or even cause fainting. Sometimes this is brief and harmless, but if it keeps happening or causes clear symptoms, it may point to dehydration, medicine effects, or another health problem. Think of someone who feels lightheaded after standing up too fast or after a hard workout.
This word is the medical name for abnormally low blood pressure. Normally, your heart pushes blood around the body with enough force to bring oxygen and nutrients to your organs. But when that pressure drops too low, often around 90/60 mmHg or lower, the body may not get the steady flow it needs. It is a bit like trying to water a garden with a weak, leaky hose: not enough gets through.
There are different ways this can happen. *Orthostatic, or postural, hypotension* happens when a person stands up quickly and their blood pressure drops for a short time, making them feel dizzy or unsteady. Some people have low blood pressure more regularly, which can be linked to dehydration, heart problems, hormone disorders, infection, blood loss, or side effects from medicine. In other cases, especially in healthy and active people, lower blood pressure may be normal and cause no trouble at all.
Symptoms can range from mild dizziness and blurred vision to tiredness, nausea, fainting, and, in severe cases, shock. Doctors check for it with a blood pressure reading, just as they do for high blood pressure. Treatment depends on the cause. It might mean drinking more fluids, changing a medicine, eating more salt under medical advice, or treating the health problem behind it.
So, feeling a little lightheaded once in a while is not always a warning sign, but ongoing or severe low blood pressure is worth discussing with a doctor. It can be a clue that the body is struggling to keep blood moving well enough, and finding the reason matters.
