It means your blood is pushing too hard against the walls of your arteries over time. Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a condition in which the force of your blood against your artery walls stays too high over time. Think of your circulatory system as a network of roads, with arteries as the highways. When that pressure stays high, your heart and blood vessels have to work harder, and over time this can damage the body.
There are different types of hypertension. Primary (or essential) hypertension develops gradually over many years and usually does not have one clear cause. Family history, age, diet, body weight, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors can all play a part. Secondary hypertension, however, is caused by an underlying medical condition, such as kidney disease, hormone problems, or certain medicines.
You might not feel that anything is wrong; it is often called the "silent killer" because symptoms are rare until serious complications appear, such as heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. Doctors measure blood pressure with two numbers: systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) and diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests). In adults, normal blood pressure is usually below 120/80 mmHg, and high blood pressure is generally diagnosed at 130/80 mmHg or higher.
Because of the risk of serious health problems, managing hypertension through lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and stress control, along with medicine if needed, is very important. It is a condition that often requires regular checkups and long-term care. So while the word may sound technical, understanding it and keeping it under control can make a real difference to your health.
