Imagine feeling unusually upbeat or irritable, full of energy, and more active than usual for several days. That is often what hypomania is like. It is a milder form of mania, and it can include racing thoughts, less need for sleep, fast speech, strong confidence, and a push to do more than usual. A person may seem especially productive, social, or creative, but they can also become impulsive or easily distracted. Unlike full mania, it does not usually cause psychosis or such severe problems that the person completely loses normal daily functioning. It is often linked to bipolar disorder, especially when these high periods alternate with depression. For example, a writer might suddenly work for hours with endless ideas, or someone might start many projects at once and feel sure they can handle all of them. Even when it feels positive at first, it can still be a sign of a mood disorder and may need medical attention.
Hypomania is a mood state marked by an unusually elevated or irritable mood, higher energy, and more activity than usual. A person in this state may feel unusually confident, talkative, creative, restless, or driven. It can feel exciting or powerful, but it is not just a normal good mood. It is a recognized mental health symptom and is milder than full mania.
Think of a musician going through hypomania: they might write several songs in one day, feel flooded with ideas, and sleep only a few hours without feeling tired. They may speak quickly, jump from one idea to another, start big plans, spend money too freely, or take risks they would normally avoid. Even so, they may still be able to go to work, keep conversations, and manage basic daily life, which is one of the main ways it differs from mania.
Hypomania is especially associated with bipolar II disorder, where these high periods can alternate with episodes of major depression. It can also appear in other mental or medical contexts, including as a reaction to substances or some treatments. While some people enjoy the extra energy or creativity, the state can also strain relationships, lead to poor decisions, or be followed by a painful crash into depression. Common signs include increased talkativeness, racing thoughts, less need for sleep, inflated self-esteem, distractibility, and impulsive behavior. In short, hypomania describes a real but milder mood elevation that may look useful or pleasant on the surface, yet still signals that something deeper may be going on and should be understood carefully.
