nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /hˈʌndrədθ/

US

Description

The "hundredth" thing is the one that comes right after the ninety-ninth. Think about a race: if you complete the hundredth lap of a hundred-lap race, you have reached the finish line. It is also an important word in fractions and decimals. If a number is rounded to the hundredths place, it is shown to two decimal places. For example, pi (pi) is about 3.14159, but rounded to the hundredths place, it becomes 3.14. You might also hear about someone celebrating their "hundredth birthday," a remarkable moment that marks a full century of life.
