The word hue refers to the pure color itself—red, blue, green, yellow, and so on. It's what distinguishes one color from another, independent of lightness or darkness. While "red" is a color, describing it as having a "crimson hue" gives you a more specific sense of its particular character.

Think about how painters mix pigments to create different hues: they're not just making a color lighter or darker, they're shifting it toward a different place in the spectrum. A color can keep the same hue while becoming darker as a shade or lighter as a tint.
