"How" is a linguistic workhorse, a word so common it often fades into the background, yet it is incredibly powerful in its ability to unlock information. At its heart, "how" asks about the way something is done, experienced, measured, or exists. It is not concerned with what happened or who was involved; it wants the details of process, condition, amount, or degree.

You'll most often encounter "how" as an interrogative, a question word that begins a request for an explanation. "How does a plane fly?" asks for an explanation of the mechanics. "How did you know?" asks about the method of discovery. "How long will it take?" seeks information about duration. "How much water do we need?" asks about amount, and "How old is she?" asks about degree measured on a scale.
