hormonally

C2
adverb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /hɔːmˈəʊnəli/

US

  • /hɔːrmˈoʊnəli/

Description

We often hear people say something is "hormonal" when emotions seem strong or change quickly, like during puberty. But "hormonally" is wider than that. It means in a way that is shaped by hormones, the chemical messengers in our bodies. These signals do much more than affect sex and reproduction. They also influence sleep, hunger, stress, growth, energy, and mood. So a person might change physically or emotionally because of shifts in hormone levels, or an animal might behave a certain way because of those signals. In that sense, acne, appetite changes, stress responses, and breeding behavior can all be influenced in this way.
