A hookah is a water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco, often in a slow, social setting. If you walk into a hookah lounge, you might see friends sitting around a table, passing a hose, and breathing in sweet-smelling smoke flavored with mint, apple, or rose.

The word usually refers to the pipe itself: a bowl holds the tobacco, charcoal heats it, water cools the smoke, and a hose carries it to the smoker. In some places, people may also use hookah to refer to the whole activity, as in "We went out for hookah after dinner." You may hear related words like shisha, narghile, or water pipe, depending on the region. Though hookah often feels relaxed and ceremonial, it still involves tobacco smoke and is not harmless.

In modern English, especially in the United States, hookah often appears in phrases like "hookah bar," "hookah lounge," or "smoking hookah." Someone might say, "They spent the evening at a hookah lounge," meaning they went to a place where people gather to smoke from these water pipes.

The word can overlap with shisha, but they are not always identical. Hookah usually means the pipe or the activity, while shisha often means the flavored tobacco smoked in it. In casual speech, however, people sometimes use the words interchangeably.

So whether you picture an ornate pipe in a traditional cafe or a modern lounge filled with fruit-scented smoke, hookah refers to a water pipe and the social smoking culture that has grown around it.
