Imagine a creature shaped like a giant barrel, spending its days in muddy rivers: that's a hippopotamus. Often called a "river horse" (though it is not closely related to a horse), this huge mammal lives in Africa. It spends most of the day in water to keep cool, then comes out at dusk to eat grass. Even though it may look calm, a hippo is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. It strongly protects its space and can move surprisingly fast on land. The word "hippopotamus" comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse," hippos meaning "horse" and potamos meaning "river." While their name suggests equine ancestry, hippos are actually more closely related to whales and dolphins! These semi-aquatic mammals inhabit rivers, lakes, and swamps in sub-Saharan Africa.
Adult hippos can weigh up to 4,500 kg (almost 10,000 pounds!) and have thick, greyish skin. They spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in water, using it to regulate their body temperature and protect their sensitive skin from the sun. Though they appear clumsy on land, hippos can run at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.
Hippos are herbivores, consuming around 35 kg (77 pounds) of vegetation each night. They're also incredibly territorial and aggressive, especially when protecting their young. Sadly, hippo populations are threatened by habitat loss and poaching. You might encounter the word "hippopotamus" in nature documentaries, conservation reports, or children's books about African wildlife. A famous example is Fiona, a baby hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo who became an internet sensation! So, while they may look like gentle giants, remember that hippos are powerful and fascinating creatures deserving of our respect and protection.
