The word "hip" has two main lives in English. In the most basic and literal sense, it names the part of the body where the leg joins the torso. This is the meaning used in everyday health and movement talk: hip pain, hip bones, hip surgery, or swaying your hips while you dance. It is one of the most common ways the word appears, and for many learners, this should be the first meaning they remember.

But "hip" also developed a social meaning. In this sense, it describes someone who knows what is new, stylish, or culturally important. A hip person seems aware of trends.
