Happy describes a state of joy, pleasure, contentment, or general well-being. It is one of the most common words in English for a good feeling, and people use it for both brief moments and a more lasting state. Someone can feel happy because of good news, a kind surprise, success, friendship, love, comfort, or simple daily pleasures.

The word can describe a reaction to something specific, as in "I'm happy to see you," or a person's usual nature, as in "She's a happy person." It also appears in many everyday patterns: being happy about something, happy with a result, happy for another person, or happy to do something. In some contexts, it simply means willing or glad, as in "I'm happy to help."

This feeling is not always loud or excited. It can be calm and quiet, closer to peaceful contentment than to celebration. It also does not have to last forever; people move in and out of it as life changes. In stories, a character may seem happy because they smile and laugh, or because they show a deep sense of peace and satisfaction. Think of Bilbo again: part of his joy comes from adventure, but part of it comes from returning to the comforts he loves. In that way, happy can describe both bright delight and gentle inner ease.
