The word "halter" has more than one life. Most commonly, it means the headgear used to lead, tie, or hold horses, mules, or other livestock. Unlike a bridle, which is made for riding and usually includes a bit in the animal's mouth, a halter fits around the head and is mainly used for handling the animal from the ground. It gives simple control and is a basic tool in barns, ranches, and stables.

The word also refers to a garment, usually called a "halter top," that fastens behind the neck and leaves the shoulders, arms, and much of the back bare. This clothing sense is common in fashion and everyday speech, especially when talking about summer clothes.

In older use, "halter" could also mean a rope for hanging someone or, more generally, a noose or restraining rope. That sense is less common today, but it still appears in historical writing and fixed expressions. The word comes from Old English "hælftre," connected with holding or restraint, which fits its main ideas well. Whether it appears in a stable, a clothing shop, or an old text, the word usually carries the idea of something that holds, guides, or fastens.
