A halter has two common uses. Most often, it is the headgear used to lead or tie a horse or other farm animal. It fits around the head and lets a person guide the animal from the ground. A halter can also be a kind of sleeveless top that fastens around the neck and leaves the shoulders and back bare. So the word may point either to animal gear or to a simple clothing style.

The word "halter" has more than one life. Most commonly, it means the headgear used to lead, tie, or hold horses, mules, or other livestock. Unlike a bridle, which is made for riding and usually includes a bit in the animal's mouth, a halter fits around the head and is mainly used for handling the animal from the ground. That sense is less common today, but it still appears in historical writing and fixed expressions. The word comes from Old English "hælftre," connected with holding or restraint, which fits its main ideas well.
