grimace

A grimace is a twisted or strained facial expression that shows pain, discomfort, disgust, or strong dislike. It is more than just a frown. The muscles around the mouth, nose, and eyes tighten, often giving the face a tense or uneasy look.

You might see a grimace in response to physical pain, like when someone takes a punch, bites into something sour, or gets a shot. But it is not limited to physical pain. People also grimace when they hear unpleasant news, face a difficult task, smell something bad, or find themselves in an awkward social moment. A child might grimace at the sight of vegetables on their plate, while an adult might grimace after reading an expensive repair bill.

A grimace is often involuntary, a quick reaction to something unpleasant. But it can also be deliberate, used to show feeling without words. A character in a story might grimace to show annoyance, doubt, or disgust. The word can also be used as a verb: "He grimaced and turned away from the smell."

So whether it is a brief sign of discomfort or a clear display of disgust, a grimace is a strong nonverbal clue that shows what someone is feeling, often before they say anything.
