The term "greenstone" is a bit of a historical quirk. Before modern mineralogy developed, people encountered various hard, green-hued stones and grouped them under this single name. It was not a precise scientific label. Instead, it described materials that seemed similar in color, toughness, density, and the smooth shine they took when polished.

These "greenstones" can include jadeite, nephrite, serpentine, or other green metamorphic rocks. The color is not always a bright emerald. It can range from deep olive and rich forest green to gray-green or almost black. In geology, the word can also refer more specifically to altered dark volcanic rocks and to "greenstone belts," which are ancient belts of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. In everyday use, though, it usually points to the hard green material used for carving.

The most famous association with "greenstone" is undoubtedly pounamu in Māori culture in New Zealand. Pounamu is considered taonga, or treasured property, and the word refers to several valued hard green stones, especially nephrite and bowenite from the South Island. Skilled carvers shape it into hei-tiki (pendants), mere (short clubs), and other ornaments and ceremonial objects. These pieces are often passed down through generations, carrying family history, honor, and deep emotional value.

While the term "greenstone" is less common in modern scientific writing, it is still widely used in archaeology, museum labels, and everyday speech when the exact mineral type is unknown or not the main point. The word reminds us that people do not value stone only as a material. They also turn it into symbols of status, protection, memory, and ancestry. Even when geologists prefer more exact names, "greenstone" still suggests durability, beauty, and the long human history of carving and keeping treasured objects.
