Granulation refers to the forming of small grains or particles, or to a surface that looks grainy and textured. You might notice it in film photography, where an image shows visible grain, or in watercolor painting, where pigment settles unevenly and creates a textured look. The word is also common in medicine: granulation tissue is the new, bumpy tissue that grows over a wound as it heals. In each case, the idea is similar: a surface or material is made up of many tiny parts that give it a rough, speckled, or uneven appearance.

Consider granulated sugar: it is processed into specific grain sizes to ensure it pours easily and dissolves consistently.
