To glorify means to praise, honor, or celebrate someone or something in an extravagant way. It goes beyond simple admiration; it is about elevating the subject to a position of high esteem and often attributing exceptional, almost transcendent qualities to them. For example, a poet might glorify nature in their verses, celebrating its power and beauty through vivid imagery and heartfelt reverence.

Historically, "glorify" has deep roots in religious contexts. To glorify God is to acknowledge divine greatness and holiness through worship, song, and devotion. This sense of awe and profound respect still lingers within the word's secular usage today. Whether we are glorifying a war hero by recounting their bravery or glorifying a past era by romanticizing its traditions, we are placing that subject on a pedestal.

The term can also be used in a visual or aesthetic sense. You might say, "The morning mist glorified the valley," suggesting the mist made the scene appear more majestic or ethereal.

Importantly, glorifying is not always synonymous with the absolute truth. Sometimes, people glorify things that are flawed or problematic—such as a difficult past or a dangerous lifestyle—out of nostalgia, loyalty, or bias. This can result in a distorted view of reality. Ultimately, to glorify is to elevate something—real or imagined—to a position of prominence, choosing to see and amplify the very best in it, even if that "best" is somewhat embellished.
