A glider is most commonly known as an unpowered aircraft designed to fly using aerodynamic lift—the same force that keeps traditional airplanes in the sky. Because they lack engines, these "sailplanes" rely on naturally occurring upward air currents. Pilots look for thermals (columns of warm rising air) or ridge lift (wind deflected upward by hills) to gain altitude, then "glide" forward to their next destination. Gliding is both a peaceful recreational hobby and a high-stakes competitive sport, with modern vessels made from sleek composite materials like fiberglass and carbon fiber.

But the word "glider" covers much more than aviation. If you are looking for comfort at home, a "glider" is a type of rocking chair that sits on a stationary base but allows the seat to move smoothly back and forth. It provides a rhythmic, soothing motion often used to lull infants to sleep.

The term also finds its way into biology and descriptions of movement. In nature, several gliding animals, such as the sugar glider or the flying squirrel, have special skin folds that let them leap from high places and travel long distances through the air without truly flying. The word can also be used more loosely for anything that moves in a smooth, floating way through air or across a surface. A wing-shaped seed pod, for example, may be described as a natural glider as it drifts away from its parent tree.

Whether it's a high-tech craft soaring through the clouds, a cozy chair in a living room, or a tiny animal leaping through the canopy, a glider is defined by its ability to move with effortless, unpowered grace.
