A gasifier is a device or reactor that converts carbon-based materials such as biomass, coal, or some waste into syngas, also called producer gas or synthetic gas. This process, known as gasification, heats the feedstock in a controlled environment with limited oxygen, and sometimes steam or air. Unlike full combustion, which mainly produces heat, gasification causes the material to react only partly, forming a combustible gas instead of simply burning it away.
The syngas that comes out can be used in several ways. It can be burned in engines, boilers, or turbines to produce heat and electricity. It can also be cleaned and processed further to help make chemicals, liquid fuels such as methanol or synthetic diesel, or hydrogen.

There are several main designs, including updraft, downdraft, and fluidized-bed systems, and each one suits different materials and operating goals.
