Gasification is a process that converts carbon-containing materials—such as coal, biomass (wood, crops), or even plastic waste—into synthesis gas, commonly known as syngas. Unlike combustion (burning), which requires high temperatures and an abundance of oxygen, gasification occurs at high temperatures but with controlled amounts of oxygen. This prevents complete burning and instead breaks down the material into a gaseous mixture primarily composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and other gases.

This syngas can then be used for various purposes: generating electricity, producing chemicals (like methanol or ammonia), or even creating synthetic fuels. It is becoming increasingly important in the context of renewable energy and waste management because it offers a way to utilize materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.

The process isn't new—historically, "town gas" used for lighting was produced through coal gasification. However, modern gasification technologies are much more sophisticated and aim to be cleaner and more efficient. You'll often hear it discussed in the context of "waste-to-energy" solutions or as a potential pathway towards carbon capture and storage, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
