The word "founder" most often means the person, or sometimes the group, that starts and establishes something important. This is usually a company, organization, school, institution, or social movement. The idea is not only "the first person there" but "the person who helped create it in the first place." A founder often sets the early purpose, structure, and direction.

In everyday English, this word is common in business and history. People speak of the founders of a startup, the founder of a university, or the founding members of a political movement. It can also be used in a broader way for someone who helped begin a field, tradition, or way of thinking, though in that kind of sentence the meaning is sometimes more symbolic than literal.

There is also another meaning, used as a verb, and it is quite different. If a ship founders, it fills with water and sinks. By extension, a plan, project, or business can founder if it breaks down and fails after running into trouble. That verbal sense is less common in basic learner use than the noun meaning, but it is still important because the same spelling appears in both cases.
