Forgetful describes someone who often has trouble remembering things. It suggests a habit of being absent-minded, such as leaving items behind, missing small details, or failing to remember plans and names. It is not necessarily a sign of low intelligence. More often, it means a person has difficulty holding on to information or bringing it back to mind at the right moment. A forgetful person might ask the same question again, misplace belongings, or struggle to remember appointments.

The degree of forgetfulness can vary a lot. For some people, it is a minor quirk, like forgetting where they put their phone. For others, it is more serious and may point to stress, exhaustion, aging, or an underlying medical problem. In stories, a character may seem warm and human because they keep losing their glasses, missing the time, or forgetting a promise they meant to keep.

"Forgetful" can also describe someone who is not paying enough attention to a duty, time, or responsibility, as in being forgetful of the time or forgetful of one's duties. In that use, the word moves a little closer to being careless, though it still usually suggests no bad intent. It is important to separate being forgetful from deliberately ignoring something. The first is an unplanned failure of memory; the second is a conscious choice.

So whether someone is misplacing glasses, drawing a blank on a name, or struggling to remember small details, being forgetful is a common human experience. It reminds us that memory is useful, but not perfect.
