People often confuse it with narration, but the key difference is this: narration is about who speaks, while focalization is about who sees, knows, or senses.
Scholars often describe three main types. Zero focalization happens when the narrative is not limited to any one character's viewpoint and can present knowledge beyond what a single character knows. Internal focalization happens when the story stays within the thoughts, feelings, and knowledge of one character, or sometimes shifts between a few characters one at a time. External focalization happens when the story presents only outward behavior, almost like a camera, without giving direct access to inner thoughts.
You can feel this difference clearly in fiction. A tightly character-centered novel may let you know only what one person notices, misunderstands, or remembers. A broader novel may move more freely and show things no single character could fully know. Some stories even shift their lens from one character to another, changing how the same event feels and what it seems to mean.
Understanding focalization helps us see how writers guide sympathy, hide information, create suspense, or produce irony. The plot may stay the same, but the effect changes depending on whose mind or viewpoint filters it. That is why the term matters in literary study and in discussions of film and other storytelling media.
