verbnounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈɪt/

US

  • /ˈfɪt/

Description

"Fit" is a small word with several common uses. It can describe how right or suitable something is for a situation, as in "These boots aren't fit for a long hike." It can also describe someone's physical condition. A runner who trains often may be very fit, meaning strong and healthy enough for hard exercise. The word also describes size and shape: do these shoes fit, or does this piece fit into the space? As a verb, it can mean putting something into the right place or making it the right size, like fitting a shelf to a wall or having a tailor fit a jacket. The main idea is that something is right for the purpose, the person, or the space.
