The word "feast" originally referred to a religious festival or holy day, often centered around a special meal. While it still keeps some of that history, today "feast" most often describes a large, rich meal shared on an important occasion. Think of a Thanksgiving dinner, a wedding banquet, or a harvest celebration where food plays a central role in bringing people together.

However, a "feast" is not limited to formal events. A simple outdoor meal with an unusually generous spread can also be called a feast; the main idea is that there is plenty to enjoy. The word also works as a verb. If people feast, they eat heartily and with pleasure. Beyond literal eating, the word is often used figuratively. To feast your eyes on something means to look at it with great pleasure or admiration, such as a beautiful landscape, a striking painting, or an impressive view. You might also hear the expression "feast or famine," which describes a situation that swings between having a great deal and having very little.

Historically, "feast days" were important religious observances, and many cultures still mark special dates with shared meals and traditional foods. So whether it is a grand banquet, a joyful family meal, or the pleasure of looking at something wonderful, a "feast" suggests richness, enjoyment, and a sense of sharing.
