Extortion is the act of obtaining something—usually money or a service—from another person through coercion, force, or threats. It's a serious crime because it violates someone's free will and subjects them to undue pressure. The key element isn't simply asking for something; it's demanding it with the implied threat of harm if the demand isn't met.

Historically, extortion was often linked to public officials abusing their power, demanding payment for doing something they were already supposed to do. That meaning still exists, but today the word is used more broadly. It can describe threatening to expose someone's secrets, ruin their reputation, damage their property, or hurt them or the people they care about unless they obey the demand.

The thing being demanded does not always have to be money. It could be a service, a favor, silence, or some other action that helps the person making the threat. For example, someone might pressure a public figure to make a certain decision by threatening to reveal damaging information.

Extortion is different from robbery because it usually works through threats rather than by taking something directly with immediate force. A robber grabs; an extortionist pressures you into handing something over.

So, if someone is leveraging fear and intimidation to get what they want from you—demanding something under threat of harm—you're likely facing extortion.
