Naturally, ethylene is produced by plants as a signaling molecule. When fruits ripen, they release ethylene, triggering changes in color, texture, and flavor. Farmers even use ethylene to artificially ripen fruits like tomatoes for more efficient harvesting and shipping.
However, most of the world's ethylene isn't found in orchards; it's produced industrially from petroleum or natural gas through a process called "cracking." This makes it one of the most widely produced organic compounds globally.
Why? Because ethylene is a starting material for polyethylene, one of the world's most common plastics, and for many other chemicals used to make things such as PVC, antifreeze, detergents, solvents, and synthetic fibers. Because of that, it plays a major part in packaging, construction materials, textiles, and even some medical products.
So, from the sweet scent of a ripe peach to the plastic that carries your groceries, ethylene is a quiet but powerful part of daily life: a tiny molecule with a very large impact.
