ethylene

C1
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ˈɛθɪlˌiːn/

US

  • /ˈɛθəˌlin/

Description

Ethylene is a simple hydrocarbon gas. It is best known as the gas that helps fruit ripen, because many fruits give it off as they become ready to eat. But that is only part of the story. It is also one of the most important basic chemicals in industry, used to make plastics and many other everyday materials.

Think of a green banana on your counter. At first it is hard and not very sweet. Then this gas starts to work, helping the fruit soften and change as it ripens. Outside the kitchen, it is a key starting material in the chemical industry and helps make things like plastic bags, bottles, and other common products.
