European powers often justified taking over other lands by claiming their culture was superior and that they were "civilizing" other societies. Even today, an ethnocentric attitude can shape international relations, business decisions, media coverage, and everyday interactions.
Anthropologists study this idea to understand how cultural bias affects research and interpretation. They often stress the importance of cultural relativism, which means trying to understand a culture on its own terms instead of judging it too quickly. Recognizing our own ethnocentric tendencies matters because it helps us become more fair, more open-minded, and better at communicating across cultures. It reminds us that there are many valid ways to live, think, and believe, even when they differ from what feels familiar to us.
