An error is a mistake or something that is not correct, true, or expected. It can happen in small everyday moments, like misspelling a word, taking the wrong turn while driving, or reading a number the wrong way. Sometimes it is minor and easy to fix, like a typo. Other times it matters much more. A mistake in a medical record, a problem in a computer program, or a bad decision can lead to serious results. The idea is simple: something has gone away from what it should be.

The word "error" describes a mistake, an inaccuracy, or a result that is not correct. It is more than just being wrong in a general sense; it usually suggests that something has moved away from an accepted standard, a known fact, or the expected result. Think of a scientist running an experiment: if the measured result does not match what should happen, that difference may be treated as an error that needs to be checked and explained.

Historically, "error" comes from the Latin word errare, meaning "to wander" or "to stray." This origin hints at the core idea of deviating from the right path—whether that path is literal, intellectual, or moral.

The term can also describe the state of being mistaken. In older or formal English, if someone is "in error," that person is wrong about something. For example: "He realized his error and apologized immediately."

So while we all aim for accuracy, errors are a normal part of life. They can be frustrating, costly, or even dangerous, but they also give us a chance to notice what went wrong, fix it, and understand things better. In that way, the word carries both a warning and an opportunity to learn.
