Epenthesis (pronounced eh-PEN-the-sis) is the insertion of one or more sounds, typically a consonant or vowel, into the middle of a word. In linguistics, it is distinct from adding sounds at the beginning of a word (prothesis) or at the end (paragoge). This process happens naturally in many languages and usually acts as a bridge that makes a word easier to pronounce.

Historically, epenthesis has helped shape language change. Many words used today contain sounds that were not present in earlier forms. As speakers repeated these patterns over time, some inserted sounds became accepted parts of standard pronunciation and, in some cases, standard spelling.

You can observe epenthesis in several forms:

• Consonant Insertion: Notice how many people say "warmth" with a faint extra "p" sound or "hamster" as "hamp-ster." The mouth is moving between nearby sounds, and a small extra consonant can slip in.
• Vowel Insertion: In some dialects, words like "athlete" may sound like "ath-uh-lete" or "film" like "fil-um." This helps break up a sound sequence that feels awkward to the speaker.
• Historical Evolution: In the history of English and other languages, some inserted sounds became permanent. A pronunciation that began as an easier way to say a word could, over time, turn into an accepted form.
