"Endoscopic" comes from Greek roots that mean "looking inside." In modern English, it is mainly a medical word. It describes something that is done with an endoscope, a thin instrument with a light and camera that lets doctors see inside the body. In many cases, the same tool can also help doctors take a biopsy, stop bleeding, remove a growth, or do other small treatments.

The word is often linked with the digestive system, as in colonoscopy or gastroscopy, but it is used in many other parts of medicine too. A bronchoscopy lets doctors look at the airways in the lungs. Other procedures use similar scope-based methods to examine areas inside the body and sometimes treat problems without open surgery.

One important idea behind endoscopic work is that it is usually minimally invasive. Compared with traditional surgery, it often means smaller cuts, less pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications.
