Enalapril is a medication belonging to a class of drugs called ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors). It's primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and certain other heart conditions linked to weak pumping. But what does all that mean?

Our bodies have a system called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) which regulates blood pressure. When this system gets overactive, it causes blood vessels to constrict, raising blood pressure. Enalapril works by blocking an enzyme in this system – angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) – preventing the production of a hormone that narrows blood vessels. This allows the vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure and making it easier for the heart to pump blood.

Enalapril is mainly used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It is also used in some people with left ventricular dysfunction, a problem in which the heart's main pumping chamber does not work as well as it should, to lower the chance of heart failure getting worse or leading to hospitalization. In some cases, doctors also use it for kidney disease related to diabetes.

Enalapril is often prescribed as a long-term treatment. It comes as tablets taken by mouth, usually once or twice a day. Common side effects include dizziness, a dry cough, and tiredness. More serious side effects are uncommon, but they can happen, including swelling called angioedema, kidney problems, or high potassium levels.

It is important to remember that enalapril requires a prescription from a doctor. It should not be used during pregnancy because it can harm the developing baby. Before starting it, patients should tell their doctor about other medicines they take and about conditions such as kidney disease.

So, while the name might sound complex, enalapril's basic job is fairly simple: it helps relax blood vessels so blood can move more easily and the heart does not have to work as hard. Used carefully under medical supervision, it is an important medicine for long-term heart and blood pressure care.
