Emendation refers to the process of making careful corrections to a text, usually in order to restore wording that is believed to be damaged, mistaken, or less accurate than it should be. It most often appears in literary, historical, academic, and editorial settings. Although it can sometimes apply to other written materials such as legal or musical texts, its strongest sense is tied to the close correction of documents.

The word comes from the Latin emendare, meaning "to correct" or "to free from faults." It became especially important in the study of classical literature. Because ancient texts were copied by hand for centuries, mistakes naturally crept in.
