"Elementary" usually refers to the basic or early part of something. It can describe the first things you learn in school, a simple level of knowledge, or something that is easy to understand. If a teacher says a student has an elementary grasp of a subject, that means the student knows the main ideas but not much more yet. In everyday language, it can also mean obvious or very simple, as when someone says the answer is elementary.

The word "elementary" has several closely related meanings, and all of them point to the idea of something basic. Many people first hear it in phrases like "elementary school," where it refers to the early stage of education. More generally, it can describe the simplest parts of a subject, the kind of things you learn before moving on to harder material.
