The word "elementary" has several closely related meanings, and all of them point to the idea of something basic. Many people first hear it in phrases like "elementary school," where it refers to the early stage of education. More generally, it can describe the simplest parts of a subject, the kind of things you learn before moving on to harder material.

The word is also used for things that are simple or easy to understand. If a problem has an elementary solution, the answer does not require deep knowledge or complicated steps. In conversation, people sometimes use it to mean "obvious." A detective in a story, for example, might call a clue elementary because the answer seems clear at once.
