The word "edition" refers to a particular version or issue of something that has been published, released, or prepared for the public. It often describes a book, newspaper, magazine, map, or a special product release. The idea is that there may be more than one form of the same thing, and each one can be called a different edition.

Originally, "edition" came from the Latin editio, meaning "a bringing forth" or "a publishing." The very first printing of a book is called the "first edition," and collectors often value it highly. But the word is not limited to first printings. Publishers often produce later editions with corrections, new information, a new design, or added material. For example, a textbook may come out in a new edition after several years so that it includes updated facts and examples.
