An echocardiogram is a non-invasive test used to assess the structure and function of the heart. This transducer is placed on your chest and sends back echoes that a computer turns into moving images.
These sound waves bounce off different parts of the heart, including the chambers, valves, walls, and major blood vessels, and are then processed by a computer to create real-time moving images. These images allow doctors to see how well the heart is pumping, whether the valves are opening and closing properly, whether the heart muscle is thickened or weakened, and sometimes whether there are blood clots or fluid around the heart.
There are different types of echocardiograms. A standard transthoracic echo is the most common. A transesophageal echo uses a probe passed into the esophagus to get clearer images. A stress echo is done during or after exercise. A fetal echo is used to check a baby's heart before birth.
Doctors might order an echocardiogram if someone has symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, swelling in the legs, or a heart murmur. It is also used to monitor known heart conditions and to check how well treatments are working. So while the name may sound technical, an echocardiogram is a safe and useful way to understand how the heart looks and how well it works.
